Why I Made the Switch to Natural Deodorants

Why I Made the Switch to Natural Deodorants – My Thoughts on Schmidt's vs. Native

Over the years, I’ve become more mindful about what I put on my skin, and deodorant is one of those everyday products that deserves a closer look. Many conventional deodorants contain parabens and aluminum, two ingredients that have raised concerns for their potential health effects. While the research isn’t fully conclusive, I decided to err on the side of caution and explore natural deodorant options. Here’s why.

Why Avoid Parabens and Aluminum?

Parabens and aluminum are common ingredients in deodorants, but they come with some baggage:

  1. Hormone Disruption:
Parabens are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they can mimic estrogen and interfere with your body’s natural hormone balance. This could potentially impact reproductive health in both men and women.
  2. Ongoing Research:
Some studies have suggested links between parabens and an increased risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer. However, the findings aren’t definitive, and more research is needed to fully understand the risks.
  3. Concerns About Aluminum:
While the amount of aluminum absorbed through the skin is thought to be minimal, there are questions about long-term accumulation in the body and its effects. This is particularly a concern for those with kidney issues, as their bodies may struggle to process aluminium efficiently.
  4. Choosing Natural Alternatives:
To reduce exposure to these chemicals, many people, including myself, opt for deodorants labeled "paraben-free" and "aluminum-free." It’s a simple switch that gives peace of mind while still keeping you fresh.

My Journey: Schmidt's Rose & Vanilla vs. Native Coconut & Vanilla

When I decided to switch to natural deodorants, I gave two popular options a try: Schmidt's Rose & Vanilla and Native Coconut & Vanilla. Both have their pros and cons, but they’ve been great additions to my daily routine.

Schmidt’s Rose & Vanilla

Why I Loved It:
From the moment I opened Schmidt’s Rose & Vanilla, I was hooked on the scent. It’s beautifully floral, natural, and not overpowering. The deodorant is free of aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, and artificial fragrances. Plus, it’s vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.

How It Worked for Me:
One thing I noticed was the texture—it’s a bit grainy compared to traditional deodorants. You’re instructed to press it against your skin to let it warm up before applying, and while this step was new to me, it wasn’t a big deal. The results were impressive: just one application in the morning kept me fresh all day. However, on the days that I exercised, I did notice the onset of smelly underarms.

The Downsides:
While I loved the scent and effectiveness, the texture might not be for everyone. It has a slightly sand-like feel that takes some getting used to. And I didn't get the results I was hoping for after exercising.

Native Coconut & Vanilla

Why I Loved It:
Native’s Coconut & Vanilla deodorant smells incredible—fresh, warm, and comforting. It’s also free of aluminum and parabens, cruelty-free, and has a smoother, more traditional deodorant texture compared to Schmidt’s.

How It Worked for Me:
This deodorant performed beautifully for everyday wear, keeping me fresh throughout the day. That said, after a workout or on particularly hot, active days, I found that I needed to reapply.

The Downsides:
As with Schmidt’s Rose & Vanilla, the only drawback for me was the need for occasional reapplication after exercise. Other than that, it’s a fantastic natural option.

The Verdict

Both deodorants have their strengths. Schmidt’s Rose & Vanilla wins for its rich, beautiful scent and all-day staying power (when not exercising), but Native Coconut & Vanilla came out on the top spot for being gentler on my skin and its smooth application make it my favorite all-round choice.

I even got my husband to start using Native Coconut & Vanilla, and he’s now a convert! Initially, he was skeptical about switching to a natural deodorant, but after trying it, and realising the potential health benefits, he was soon convinced.
