Natural Cough Remedy

Natural Cough Remedy

When it comes to natural remedies, I’ve personally tried Barbara O'Neill's Honey Onion Cough Syrup, and it’s become a go-to for our family whenever someone starts feeling under the weather or has an incessant, uncomfortable cough. It’s simple to make, uses organic ingredients, and feels like it soothes right from the first spoonful.

Here’s how to make it:

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 raw onion - brown, purple
  • Local honey (organic, if possible)
  • 2 sterilised mason jars with lids

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Dice the onion into small pieces.
  2. In one mason jar, layer about 1/4 cup of diced onion, then drizzle 1/4 cup of honey on top.
  3. Repeat layering onion and honey until all the onion is used up (usually 4-5 layers).
  4. Secure the lid, turn the jar upside down so the honey coats everything, then flip it back upright.
  5. Let it sit for 24 hours at room temperature. The honey will extract all the goodness from the onion, creating a syrup.
  6. After 24 hours, strain the mixture using a small mesh strainer over another jar to separate the syrup from the onions.
  7. Store the syrup in the fridge, and it’s ready to use whenever needed.

If you only have small jars, you might only need 1 onion and drizzle a tablespoon or 2 to cover the layer of onion, and alternate the layers until the jar is full. It keeps indefinitely—though in my experience, it gets used up pretty fast! And it tastes good too…the honey overrides the onion 😊

How We Use It:

  • Adults: 1 tsp, 3 times a day.
  • Children: 1/2 tsp, 3 times a day.
  • Toddlers: 1/8 tsp, 3 times a day.
(Note: Not recommended for infants due to the honey.)
  • If you’re vegan, you can substitute honey with maple syrup (just note the shorter shelf life—about 6 months or as per the expiration date).
  • You can customize the recipe with fresh ginger, garlic, or other herbs for added benefits.

Why I Love It:

When you compare this homemade remedy to over-the-counter cough syrups, it’s a no-brainer. Many store-bought options may contain harmful ingredients like artificial flavors, dyes, sucralose, and preservatives. This natural alternative not only supports the body’s healing process but is also free from refined sugars and chemicals.

It’s so simple and effective.
